Continuing to amaze at the age of 41, heavyweight contender Mark Hunt did it again at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in the main event of UFC Fight Night, knocking out former two-time champion Frank Mir to put together his first two-fight winning streak in the Octagon since 2011.
There’s always a winner and a loser, and it’s sad that one of us had to lose tonight,” Hunt said. “Frank’s a good dude, I respect him a lot.”
Mir was effective using distance to keep Hunt at bay in the early going, but like death and taxes, Sydney’s Hunt landing a bomb was inevitable, and with a little over two minutes left, the “Super Samoan” struck with a right hand over Mir’s ear, and it was game over, as Mir fell to the deck and Hunt walked away, knowing any follow-up shots were unnecessary. Referee Marc Goddard agreed, calling a stop to the bout at 3:01 of the opening round.
With the win, the ninth-ranked Hunt moves to 12-10-1; the tenth-ranked Mir, 36, falls to 18-11.
