LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 16, 2012) – Will Power drove the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet to victory this weekend at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Power, who joined Motegi Racing for the 2012 season, has now won seven of the last 11 IndyCar races on road and street courses. It was the second win in a row for Power, who also claimed victory two weeks ago at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. The finish vaults him to the lead in the series drivers’ championship.
Power had to overcome an IndyCar grid penalty administered to all Chevrolet-powered cars on Sunday. He started 10 positions behind his qualifying spot.
“I thought it would be very tough to win the race,” Power told his team after the contest. “We had a great strategy. We had to save so much fuel to get there, but we did it. I give full credit to the No. 12 Verizon crew and Chevrolet. I’ve been trying to win this race for four years, and now I’ve done it.”
Power’s helmet was just one place where the distinctive Motegi Racing “M” logo was on display in California this weekend. A number of top teams at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach were supported by Motegi Racing, as well as the event itself.
The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, with its multi-disciplinary motorsports events, is an exciting event for Motegi Racing. The wheel company is heavily involved in racing activities, and is committed to motorsport for product development and evolution.
Motegi Racing backed Power, the Brian Herta Motorsports team, and announced late last week it would be the primary livery on the No. 22 Lotus driven by Oriol Servia for this event.
Motegi Racing is also a sponsor of Formula Drift driver Fredric Aasbo, who took the “Pro” victory in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race this weekend.
Technical partner Paul Miller Racing, driver Townsend Bell, and the Dempsey Racing team also sported Motegi Racing colors in ALMS competition.
Motegi Racing also took part in the popular celebration of 20 years of Racer Magazine on Saturday night.
The 38th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach featured wheel-to-wheel racing on an historic 1.97-mile, 11-turn seaside street circuit in Long Beach, CA, April 13-15, 2012.
